jeffrey epstein loved lolita. there’s no surprise there. he ordered multiple copies of the book through amazon. he recommended it to friends. he instructed redacted email addresses to read it along with an annotated guide, to ensure they fully appreciated the work. lolitas are referred to in emails; lolita herself signs off at the signature line. there is a veritable sea of women ensnared in the web woven by epstein and his associates, a web they merely added to, building on the work of generations before them to dehumanize, disempower, and delegitimize women and girls.
i feel compelled to witness. i feel like drowning when i do, find myself slunk all the way sideways on the couch in the middle of the afternoon, unsure of how to move.
and so, a small project: i’m pulling on the lolita thread. through the process of blackout and erasure, one chapter at a time, i am trying to excavate girlhood from humbert humbert’s clutches. to follow along, join me on substack or instagram at @reclaiming_lolita.
this is a rescue mission. for all of us.
